So my daughter wanted a sliding barn door in her bedroom to hide her porta potty. Well not true. It was for her closet. I bet you really thought she would want to hide that awesome bright blue poop rocket. Anyway, I bought this kit and make a really cool barn style door for her closet and attached this kit. Works great and is easy to follow instructions. Read them first as there is important info in there that will keep you from putting holes where they dont need to be.
I am an experienced DIYer and have many years of experience doing woodworking and household reno's but this project would have been more than most could handle. The sliding track doesn't account for having any door casings around the door opening which made the installation so much more complicated/difficult. I had to adjust every calculation and even then it ended up barely being capable of accounting for the additional height of the standard door casing. I had to chisel out two large notches on the casings for the track hardware bolts to pass through, and in order to account for the additional height of the door casing, I had to install the hardware to the door as high as possible which wasn't ideal and doesn't look the greatest. I also had to sawzal off a section of the rail bumper so it was in the correct position. In order to hit the 16 center studs, I had to drill additional holes in the rail since they were not predrilled at 16 centers. Overall, the rail system is good quality but each installation is going to come with it's own complications. If you're planning on leaving up your door casings, I would save yourself the trouble and use another track system.
I used this for a hardwood door I made out of tongue and groove and 1x4s. It worked out pretty well, I recommend using a solid wood plank in back of the hardware. The hardware to attach it to the wall was decent, but if you miss a stud, there might be trouble. It looks very nice! The price was a lot better than at Lowes.
Fabulous. I orginally was concerned that possibly the quality of the hardware would be substandard because of the reasonable price, but also, because of the reasonable price it was was worth the risk of checking it out. I was greatly pleased, both with the quality and the savings of approximately $140 compared to prices at several home improvement centers.
I had never purchased or installed a barn door prior buying the UMAX kit. I chose this kit for it’s styling, price and great reviews. I was not disappointed when I received and began and finally finished the installation. Very complete! It had everything need for a proper install and specially into modern home with 16” on center studs. However, I was installing it into a very old home with non standard stud spacing and plaster latticework. The results, while not perfect, were quite acceptable. The hardware looks very good with a thick black coating. It is very simple yet elegant and will compliment most decor. The instructions were also very thorough and easily understood. I plan to purchase the basic single door kit for another doorway please project next.
Used on a lightweight door. Not sure how it would hold up with a solid heavy door. Our use was simple. Seems fine. We like the J design because it seems to be much stronger than not having that second surface to mount too compared to a regular strait design. Very inexpensive compared to competitors prices of similar design.
Sturdy, easy to assemble, and slides smoothly. I recommend a header board if being installed over a framed doorway. Without the framing, it should be perfect without one.
